What you'll do
- Separate compute from data storage so dictation systems can grow without scaling both together
- Set up observability and alerts for FastAPI services to surface serious failures before users encounter them
- Build isolated end-to-end test environments for onboarding, dictation, Notetaker and other core product experiences
- Strengthen infrastructure redundancy and availability across regions, then remove production bottlenecks at their source
- Improve engineers’ development workflows so they get faster feedback without sacrificing correctness
What you bring
- You’ve built backend systems where compute, storage and services could scale independently
- You’ve put production observability and alerting in place that teams relied on
- You’ve owned infrastructure, deployments and on-call for services you shipped yourself
- You’ve improved developer workflows while maintaining correctness
Who this fits
This mid-level role suits an infrastructure engineer who connects technical choices to customer outcomes and has helped critical systems grow through startup or hyperscale stages. It is based on-site in San Francisco. Visa sponsorship may be available, with reasonable efforts made after an offer.
From the employer
About Wispr
Wispr is an AI research and product company building the voice interface for computing. AI can now reason, code, and act. Yet, humans still do the work of the interface. We think that’s backwards.
Our first products are Flow, which lets you speak naturally in any application, and Notetaker, which builds context across conversations. We’re building toward an interface that can perceive, understand, and take action with earned trust. That means solving hard problems across models, systems, and product - and caring about the final human experience as deeply as the technology underneath it.
We’re a talent-dense team that holds strong opinions, tests them quickly, and builds technology that sparks joy. Our goal is to build the first voice interface used every day by a billion people.
About the role
You’ll own the backend systems that keep our products fast, available, and safe to change as Wispr scales. You’ll evolve how compute and data scale, establish consistent observability across our services, and rebuild the development workflows engineers use to test critical product experiences.
What you’ll do
Decouple compute and data storage so core dictation systems can scale independently
Build systematic observability and alerting across our FastAPI services, catching critical failures before users do
Create isolated, end-to-end test environments for onboarding, dictation, Notetaker, and other core experiences
Improve the redundancy and global availability of critical infrastructure
Remove production bottlenecks at their root and give engineers faster, more trustworthy feedback loops
You may be a fit if
You’ve designed backend systems whose compute, storage, and services needed to scale independently
You’ve built observability and alerting that teams trusted in production
You’ve owned infrastructure, deployment, and on-call for services you personally shipped
You’ve improved developer workflows while increasing—not trading away—correctness
You connect infrastructure decisions to measurable customer outcomes
You’ve evolved critical systems through startup or hyperscale growth
Prior voice, ML, model-serving, or SRE-title experience is not required.

We sponsor H1B, O1, EB1, L1, STEM OPT, and more. We can't guarantee sponsorship for every role, but if we make you an offer we'll make every reasonable effort, with help from our immigration law firm.
We strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every qualification. The strongest candidates we meet rarely do, so don't exclude yourself prematurely. We're rethinking how humans interact with AI, and doing that well demands diversity of perspective and experience.
