Job Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is the world leader in serving science, with annual revenue of approximately $40 billion. Our Mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Whether our customers are accelerating life sciences research, solving complex analytical challenges, increasing productivity in their laboratories, improving patient health through diagnostics or the development and manufacture of life-changing therapies, we are here to support them. Our global team of more than 100,000 colleagues delivers an unrivaled combination of innovative technologies, purchasing convenience and pharmaceutical services through our industry-leading brands, including Thermo Scientific, Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen, Fisher Scientific, Unity Lab Services, Patheon and PPD.

Location/Division Specific Information

We are a research, development, and production site in Bremen currently, with about 500 employees, whose “high-end” measurement and analysis instruments (mass spectrometers) are used in research and science worldwide. Our innovative products in the fields of Life Sciences MS and Inorganic MS, as well as Trace Elemental Analysis, are among the leading products globally in their respective markets.

The Scientific Software & Research Platform Engineer combines scientific investigation, data science, software engineering, and deep instrument knowledge to improve instrument performance, calibration, diagnostics, and reliability. This on-site role requires regular hands-on work with spectrometers, including prototypes, and close collaboration with Research, Production/Operations, and Support.

A day in the Life:

  • Design, execute, and validate experiments using instrument, multi-sensor, and multi-modal data.
  • Develop and evaluate algorithms for diagnostic and failure-mode modeling.
  • Turn exploratory analyses and prototypes into reusable, well-tested research tools and reproducible experiment frameworks.
  • Manage data versioning, metadata, experiment tracking, and scalable execution from laptops to servers/clusters.
  • Build safe programmatic interfaces to instrument control software, firmware, and test stands, including autonomous agentic workflows.
  • Package, install, and validate new iterations in lab and production test environments.
  • Collaborate with researchers, Production Engineering, IT/Operations, and Support to ensure reliable and traceable deployment.
  • The impact of this role is both scientific and technical: turning observations into trusted, reproducible diagnostic insights while building tools and knowledge that can be reused across instruments and teams.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • Background in physics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative/scientific field, with a strong track record of independent research and quantitative modeling

Experience

  • Hands-on scientific investigation, experimental design, and analysis of complex real-world instrument or experimental data.
  • Experience developing research software and translating scientific insights into diagnostic, predictive, or decision-support tools.
  • Comfortable working directly with physical instruments and deploying and validating software in controlled lab or production test environments.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Scientific Software Engineering: Python, clean APIs, modular design, testing, and reproducible research workflows.
  • Data & Modeling: Data analysis and visualization, SQL/NoSQL and file-based data systems, diagnostic modeling, experiment tracking, and model/version management.
  • Engineering Tools: Strong Linux/Bash; CI, containerization, and server/cluster execution. Familiarity with C++/Rust is a plus.
  • Production-aware delivery: Ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, and validate research software and translate manual processes into Documented and increasingly automated workflows.
  • English: Full professional proficiency, written and spoken.

What we offer:

  • Employment with an innovative, future-oriented organization
  • Outstanding career and development prospects
  • Company pension scheme and other fringe benefits
  • Exciting company culture which stands for integrity, intensity, involvement, and innovation
