Role brief

devopsroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Set reliability targets for services supporting live flights, then measure performance against those baselines
  • Keep production monitoring and alerts effective, improving observability across the systems
  • Take part in on-call coverage, direct incident response, and lead reviews that turn failures into follow-up action
  • Strengthen databases, Kubernetes, messaging, and multi-zone availability against outages
  • Automate infrastructure and operational tasks, and coordinate with cloud, onboard software, operations, and safety teams

What you bring

  • At least three years running production systems in SRE, infrastructure, or backend roles, including on-call work
  • Strong AWS, Kubernetes, and container experience, plus practical infrastructure-as-code work
  • Experience creating monitoring and alerting with Prometheus, Grafana, or comparable listed tools
  • Fluency in a programming or scripting language and a record of diagnosing incidents and making lasting fixes

Who this fits

This suits a hands-on mid-level engineer comfortable owning reliability in a safety-critical setting and working across technical and operational teams. The role is onsite in Mountain View.

From the employer

Matternet is building the future of delivery with autonomous drone networks that move critical goods faster, cleaner, and at lower cost. We work with partners across healthcare, logistics, food, and retail to deliver everything from medical items to everyday essentials, safely and reliably.

We're looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join the platform team that builds and runs the backend, data, and infrastructure services behind Matternet's delivery network. You'll own the reliability of the systems that support live flight operations: defining how we measure it, building the alerting and automation that protect it, and leading how we respond when something breaks. This is a hands-on role in a safety-critical environment. You'll work across our AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes, Terraform, our observability stack, and the messaging and data systems that connect the fleet to the cloud.

In this role, you will:

  • Define and track service-level objectives for the services that support live operations, and set reliability baselines
  • Own and improve monitoring, alerting, and observability across production systems
  • Build and participate in an on-call rotation, lead incident response, and run effective post-incident reviews
  • Improve the resilience of core systems, including databases, Kubernetes, messaging, and multi-AZ availability
  • Automate infrastructure and operational work with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD
  • Collaborate with cloud, onboard software, operations, and safety teams on how systems are built, deployed, and run

Requirements

  • 3+ years in SRE, infrastructure, or backend roles operating production systems, including on-call responsibility
  • Strong experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and containers
  • Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience
  • Experience building monitoring and alerting with tools such as Prometheus and Grafana
  • Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language
  • A track record of incident response, root-cause analysis, and turning incidents into durable fixes
  • Clear technical communication and cross-functional collaboration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Terragrunt or Gruntwork
  • Experience operating Kafka, MQTT brokers, or other messaging systems
  • Experience with PostgreSQL operations, including upgrades, replication, and backup and recovery
  • Knowledge of security practices for cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with IoT/telemetry, fleet, robotics, or other systems with hardware in the loop
  • UAV, aerospace, logistics, or other operationally critical domain experience
  • Experience using AI coding assistants to accelerate development

Benefits

At Matternet, we’re advancing a new era of logistics, one where autonomous drones deliver what matters faster, cleaner, and more efficiently. We know our mission is challenging, but it's worth it, and we are committed to taking care of the people who make it possible.

  • Compensation: The expected starting range for this role is $160,000–$205,000, based on San Francisco Bay Area market data. This range reflects the target starting pay for candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the role. Final compensation will depend on factors such as your experience, skills, level, location, and potential impact.
  • Total Rewards: In addition to base pay, our compensation packages include equity and benefits such as medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage, flexible spending accounts (FSA), unlimited paid time off, company holidays, and a 401(k) plan.
